WhatsApp Conversation-Based Pricing Explained
Updated on: January 2025
WhatsApp Business API pricing has transitioned to a conversation-based model, charging businesses based on 24-hour message threads rather than individual messages. Here’s a detailed breakdown:
What is WhatsApp Conversation?
A conversation is a 24-hour message thread between a business and its customer. It starts when:
Business sends a message to the customer.
A business replies to a customer’s message.
All incoming messages from users are free, but businesses are charged only if they respond.
What are the Types of WhatsApp Conversations?
Conversations fall into four categories:
Marketing Conversations
Used for promotions, offers, new product announcements, or retargeting campaigns.
Requires pre-approved templates.
Cost: ₹0.88 per conversation (for Indian users).
Example: "Get 30% off on your next order! Reply with 'YES' to claim the offer."
Utility Conversations
Designed for transactional updates like order confirmations, delivery updates, or payment reminders.
Cost: ₹0.125 per conversation (for Indian users).
Example: "Your order has been shipped. Track it here: [tracking link]."
Authentication Conversations
Used for sending one-time passcodes for user authentication during login or account recovery.
Cost: ₹0.125 per conversation (for Indian users).
Example: "Your login OTP is 123456."
Service Conversations
Support conversations initiated by users to resolve inquiries.
Effective November 1, 2024: Free for all businesses.
Example: "Hi! How can we assist you today?"
How Are Conversations Charged?
A: Conversations are charged based on their category when a template message is delivered. If no conversation of that category exists, a new one is opened.
Example 1: Sending a promotional (marketing) message opens a marketing conversation.
Example 2: Sending an order update (utility) message opens a utility conversation.
Service conversations: Are opened when responding to user messages with non-template messages.
What is a Free-Entry Point Conversation?
When a user messages a business via Click-to-WhatsApp ads or a Facebook Page Call-to-Action button, a free-entry point conversation is opened if the business responds within 24 hours.
Duration: 72 hours.
Cost: Free for all messages during this period.
Note: Free-entry conversations close all other ongoing conversations.
When Are Conversation Credits Charged?
Businesses are charged:
When they send the first message to initiate a conversation.
For any business-initiated conversation using approved templates (Marketing, Utility, Authentication).
Service conversations are free from November 1, 2024.
What Happens If My Conversation Credits Are Low?
If your balance drops below ₹10 (INR):
You won’t be able to send new messages.
Broadcasting and API-triggered campaigns will stop. To continue, recharge your account via the Billing section in Samwad.
How Do I Choose the Right Template Category?
Businesses should select the appropriate template category to avoid rejection or incorrect charges. For example:
Promotional text in a Utility template will either be rejected or charged as a Marketing message.
Use Samwad's template categorization guide for accuracy.
What Are the Key Updates for 2024?
Service Conversations: Free for all businesses starting November 1, 2024.
Marketing Conversations: Rates updated from October 1, 2024, in specific markets.
Utility Conversations: Rates reduced from August 1, 2024, to encourage more transactional use.
